The city's police chief updated the council on recruitment and staffing, saying the department has a strong applicant pool and that cadet Peyton Ritchie is "ready to go to the academy," which starts July 7. The chief said the department currently has three vacancies and expects one additional vacancy by the end of July.
Council discussed timelines for background checks and medical/psychological testing, and the chief said the department could likely complete the hiring and background process within two weeks if prioritized. "Sometimes we just have to wait a long time till they could schedule them in, but that's not been an issue for a long time," the chief said, describing the current hiring pace as favorable.
