Waste Management pitches recycling partnership; invites NRAC to tour local MRF

Blake Leonelli, Government Affairs representative for Waste Management (WM), briefed the Natural Resources Advisory Commission on March 5, 2026 about collaboration opportunities with Orem. He said WM’s ultimate goal is “zero waste,” highlighted Orem’s prior recycling initiatives such as the “top 10 in the bin” outreach, and described a pilot program for collecting plastic film and bags.
Commissioners pressed WM on technical and market questions, including the recyclability of hard plastic containers and the availability of end-market buyers for sorted materials. Leonelli said WM’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) processes Orem’s material but is not currently configured to process glass; he said WM hopes to add that capability in the future. The minutes note that glass recycling in Utah is available through Momentum Recycling and that Orem maintains a public glass drop-off at Public Works, 1450 W 550 N.
Leonelli invited the commission to tour the MRF to observe processing and explore education and outreach partnerships. The presentation was recorded as part of the commission’s March 5 agenda.
