Grapevine police and fire chiefs explain lockdown, evacuation and on-site responder actions

Grapevine's police and fire leadership described district protocols for on-campus danger and for evacuations during the GCISD briefing.
"Lockdown is initiated when the announcement locks, lights, out of sight is made and is used as a response to danger inside the building," said Mike Hamlin, chief of police with the city of Grapevine. He told attendees that during a lockdown students and staff should secure themselves behind locked doors, silence phones and make rooms appear unoccupied while police respond to the scene.
Sgt. Bobby Smith explained what happens when law enforcement arrives: a large police presence focused on safety, investigations that could include searches and evacuation, and the need for students and staff to remain calm and follow instructions until released by first responders.
Fire Chief Daryl Brown said "Evacuate is used to move people out of the building and is most associated with a fire alarm," and noted that other hazards (gas leaks, hazardous materials) may also trigger an evacuation and sometimes require relocation to a predesignated site.
