Kingsbury County holds first reading of ordinance tightening burn-ban removal process

Emergency Management Director Kristen Longville read the first reading of Ordinance No. 76, which amends Ordinance No. 72 to set procedures for declaring and lifting a fire danger emergency and prohibiting open burning within the county.
The ordinance adds language that any burn ban may be lifted only when conditions no longer pose a significant fire risk and requires that removal of the burn ban be approved jointly by the Kingsbury County Office of Emergency Management and the Chairman of the Board, with input gathered from local fire chiefs. Longville presented the ordinance text and the Board scheduled the second reading for May 5, 2026.
Longville also recommended keeping the current burn ban in place for another two weeks, a recommendation the Board agreed to by consensus. She reported intermittent issues with 911 radio lines and said she is researching fiber or 5G cellular options to ensure system reliability; staff will return with findings.
