Township flags higher asphalt prices; paving plans may be scaled back

Township Business Administrator and Road Superintendent Bob Oliva told trustees on April 5 that asphalt prices are fluctuating upward as a result of oil‑price changes and that the township may need to adjust the amount of paving planned for this year to remain within budget. Oliva said Bettis Asphalt representatives assigned to the township are the same contacts used previously when asphalt was purchased from Hamm.
Co‑Road Superintendent John Tipton reported there are currently 13 open work orders, that road salt ordered in advance was not needed this season and will be available for use next fall, and that all paving equipment has been serviced and is ready for paving operations. Tipton also reiterated the plan to dispose of a 2006 Case backhoe and apply proceeds toward a skid steer loader purchase. The Board did not adopt any new appropriation at the meeting; staff said they will adjust paving scope if necessary to stay within the existing budget.
