Fire department wins grants, orders bunker gear and new Lifepak; board raises chief’s pay

The Soldier Township Fire Department received several equipment grants and approvals during 2020. Chief Schmitt told the board it had been awarded a State Fire Marshal grant covering three sets of bunker gear; the department additionally applied for and received a First Responder grant that will help fund a Lifepak 15 monitor. The board approved purchase of additional bunker gear and later approved the Lifepak purchase after grant confirmation.
In December the board approved a Prairie Ranger brush truck bid from Hays Fire for $142,290.42 and a loose-equipment order of $4,917.40. Separately, at a September meeting the board voted 3-0 to raise the fire chief’s salary to $75,000 per year, effective immediately. Chief Schmitt also described training, an ice-rescue operation in Soldier Creek that used mutual aid and operational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
