Council issues proclamations, hears sustainability and parks commission updates

At its May 21 meeting, Mission City Council issued a series of proclamations and received updates from two advisory commissions.
Proclamations: Council presented proclamations recognizing National Gun Violence Awareness Day (May 6 observance in early June), National Police Week, Building Safety Month, Kids to Parks Day and National Public Works Week. Katie Mangelsdorf of Moms Demand Action accepted the gun-violence proclamation and urged residents to participate in Wear Orange events and a county rally; she described the history and community solidarity aspects of Wear Orange. The mayor and council thanked department representatives for public safety and public-works service.
Sustainability Commission: Josh Thiebke, chair of the Sustainability Commission, reviewed five strategic goals (climate action partnerships; sustainability best practices advocacy; community awareness; resident and business adoption of sustainability practices; retaining commission expertise). He highlighted collaborative successes (scorecard work, a tree drive, and an annual Go Green environmental fair) and said an environmental fair is scheduled for Oct. 18, 2025.
Parks, Recreation & Tree Commission: Nicole Sullivan, PRT chair, reviewed the commission's priorities for the year: Broadmoor Park bridge replacement/redesign (emphasizing accessibility, stormwater management and long-term maintenance), public-art installations (murals and rotating sculptures), a possible demonstration garden in partnership with Kansas Master Gardeners, Rock Creek corridor trail resurfacing priorities and bench replacements. The commission recommended planning ahead for playground and parking upgrades and working on fundraising/donation options to support projects.
Council thanked both commissions for their work and asked staff to coordinate follow-up on priorities during upcoming budget and CIP discussions.
