The Lead City Commission approved advertising for a vacant patrol officer position with a spending cap of $400 for advertising costs. The motion (M/Carr, S/Klein) carried. The item was moved as an agenda change earlier in the meeting and brought back under Public Safety.
Separately, Mayor Dustin Heupel proposed forming a Police Needs Committee to develop incentives or approaches to attract more and better applicants. The commission passed a motion (M/Rohrer, S/Carr) to form the committee. Chief Williams told the commission he "just does not want this to interfere with the hiring process" and recommended that department heads be included on the committee so practical questions could be answered. Heupel indicated that Williams and City Administrator Robin Lucero "can be on this committee to some extent." Commissioner Robert Carr expressed concern that changing incentives for one department might require similar consideration for others.
