Mayor Dustin Heupel said he “would like to form a committee to come up with incentives or ways to get better applicants,” and the motion to create the committee (moved by Commissioner Al Rohrer, seconded by Commissioner Robert Carr) was carried. Commissioner Kayla Klein said she supported looking at the issue citywide.
Commissioner Carr cautioned that changing incentives for one department could require comparable changes for others and said he did not want the committee’s work to interfere with hiring the next patrol officer. Police leadership also urged inclusion: Chief Williams asked why department heads had not been consulted and said a department head should sit on the committee to provide knowledge and answer questions. Mayor Heupel said Chief Williams and City Administrator Robin Lucero could serve on the committee “to some extent.”
The vote was recorded as carried; the minutes do not list individual roll-call votes or a schedule for the committee’s first meeting.
