Board reviews first reading of revised discipline policy and proposed district EpiPen availability

Assistant Superintendent Lundstrom presented a first reading of two policy updates: revised student-discipline rules and an anaphylaxis-response policy enabling district-held EpiPens.
On discipline, Lundstrom summarized the key change as clearer definitions for "discretionary" conduct (classroom disruptions) versus "nondiscretionary" conduct (examples given: firearms, dangerous weapons, gang activity) that trigger automatic procedures. "Nondiscretionary is when students do things like bring a firearm to school, that's an automatic, expulsion for a year or bring dangerous weapons or ... gang activity," Lundstrom said, explaining those incidents require mandatory district responses. He also explained limits on denying meals or graduation requirements and clarified classroom-exclusion practices and grievance procedures.
On health policy, Lundstrom said Washington state has a standing order that allows schools to have a general-use EpiPen available districtwide; families with children who have known anaphylaxis still must provide a student-specific EpiPen. When Director Tash asked how the district pays for EpiPens, Lundstrom said, "I think they're provided at the state level...We just have to request them, through the Department of Health," and added the district nurse procured enough devices for the district. The board treated both items as a first reading; no policy adoption or vote occurred at the meeting.
