Nevada City adopts 'Culture Forward' county arts and culture action plan

Council unanimously approved a resolution recognizing "Culture Forward 2026–2032," Nevada County's arts and culture action plan, after a presentation by Gianna Arbax and remarks from Eliza, outgoing executive director of Nevada County Arts and Culture.

The plan, described as the county's first coordinated arts and culture action plan, emerged from more than 18 months of community engagement and an inventory of cultural assets. Presenter Gianna Arbax said the plan identifies 12 connected priorities including career pathways for artists, strengthened arts education, a regional marketing plan and a funding strategy. Arbax said a local economic impact survey estimated $66 million in arts‑related economic activity across the county and that several pilot actions (an eight‑week artist accelerator and a new issue of the county's Muse publication) are already underway.

Eliza, the county arts executive director who will depart in the coming weeks, called the adoption symbolic and urged continued city support. "This makes your adoption this evening... more symbolic and supportive of our existing partnership," Eliza said. Councilmembers thanked the presenters and asked staff to identify specific ways the city can support implementation, including potential financial or programmatic assistance.

Council action: the council adopted the resolution recognizing Culture Forward and authorized the Public Arts Commission to set its annual calendar, with a roll call showing unanimous support among members present.

Next steps: City staff and council members said they will explore concrete steps for city support, including identifying priorities where municipal resources, advocacy or partnerships can accelerate plan implementation.
