Selectboard backs state’s bid to acquire timber and mineral rights at White River WMA, seeks protections for Honey Brook Road

Aaron Hurst, ANR State Lands Forester, briefed the board on ongoing negotiations for the State to acquire timber rights (and, according to discussion, mineral rights) from the Webster Company for the White River Wildlife Management Area (WRWMA). Fred Glanzberg of New England Forestry Consultants and Stephen Webster provided background on land and timber-rights arrangements and said the change should not affect current-use land status or town tax revenue.
Contractor Derek Aldrighetti said logging access would require upgrading the Honey Brook Road (a legal trail) to a service road for harvest operations; Reuben Sotak urged that any temporary stream crossing be removed and that the trail be returned to a more natural state after harvesting. The Selectboard requested a written proposal detailing how the trail and crossings would be protected and restored and said it would review specifications at the August 3 meeting. The board then voted unanimously to sign a letter supporting the State's planned acquisition of timber and mineral rights.
