Mary Cheney, the town’s deputy tree warden, attended the commission meeting March 25 after Tree Warden Cliff Mix had a last-minute conflict and reported that Cliff is catching up on tree-related requests and will take up a rewrite of the town’s Shade Tree Plan.
Cheney told members the tree-warden email (treewarden@townofcharlotte.com) is now working for requests. She said Cliff will review all ash trees and make decisions about town responses, and the commission noted the town currently lacks a formal policy governing tree removal and replanting, particularly on Thompson’s Point. Members discussed jurisdictional limits for roadside trees, noting homeowners and the road commissioner bear responsibility for roadside trees, while plantings or uses of town funds would need Selectboard approval.
Commissioners also raised recent field incidents: a Shagbark Hickory that fell on Thompson’s Point but did not strike a powerline or the road, and a dead tree on East Thompson’s Point Road that members said should be reported for removal. Cheney reiterated that residents should report hazardous trees to the tree warden so the office can determine appropriate action.
