The Westchester SD 92-5 Board of Education voted July 23 to approve a three-year renewal of the district's e-learning program following a staff presentation and a public hearing. The board opened the hearing, heard the presentation of program requirements, and then approved the renewal by roll call.
Board President Brenda Wojlowski, who led the presentation, said the renewal is "our 3 year terminal" and clarified the action authorizes an e-learning option for the next three school years while a detailed plan will be developed in October. Wojlowski told trustees that under school code each e-learning day must provide at least five clock hours of instruction or schoolwork and that the district must provide remote access or a non-electronic alternative for students without reliable internet.
Wojlowski said the district uses Google Classroom, Seesaw and Google Meet for live instruction and monitors participation through a beginning-of-day attendance check; preschool students receive packet alternatives. She emphasized the program's flexibility: "We're not saying that teachers and students have to be on for all five hours," she said, adding that participation can be built around live lessons and assignment completion.
Trustees asked about schedules, lunch breaks and supports for students with IEPs; staff explained kindergarten-through-5 schedules include a 30-minute lunch break and that intervention specialists join Google Meets to provide accommodations. The board approved the renewal as presented and noted the formal plan will be posted and voted on at a later meeting.
Next steps: staff will finalize the detailed e-learning plan in October, submit required notices to the Regional Office of Education, and post materials for public inspection before the board's adoption deadline.
