Beaufort County library reports surge in new cards, readies summer programs and free lunches

Amanda, the library director, told the board the library has issued 5,630 new library cards this year as of April 30, up from 4,286 last year.
"As of our last data of April 30, we have now issued 5,630 new library cards this year," Amanda said, adding that the figure reflects staff outreach and community engagement. She said the system expects to exceed last year’s total before the fiscal year ends.
Amanda also described the system’s summer reading program, which will run May 31–July 31 under the theme "color our world." Participants are asked to read 20 minutes a day; Amanda said, "Whatever you want — you can read the back of a cereal box. It can be your emails, mister Moore." The program includes checkpoint prizes and a grand-prize drawing supported by more than 50 local businesses.
The board heard that a USDA-funded summer lunch program will operate at all six library locations in partnership with the Beaufort County School District, offering cold lunches Monday through Friday to residents under age 18. Amanda described the lunches as similar to field-trip boxed lunches and encouraged families to take advantage of the service.
