Staff presented a green-infrastructure grant proposal to restore wetlands and upgrade amenities at Strawberry Park and asked the committee to sign a letter of support.
"The City is planning to submit a grant...we would do some wetland improvements. There is a wetland there, so we basically scoop that out, do some restoration, move the playground so it's not sunken in the winter, install some trails," the staff member said, describing work to support native plantings, habitat restoration and large-scale tree plantings. Staff said Strawberry Park has been waiting about 11 years for planned upgrades and that the project design was updated in the city’s park system plan. Staff reported existing letters of support from the Park & Tree Committee, the South Santiam Watershed Council, Linn County Parks & Rec and the Chamber of Commerce.
Committee members indicated consensus to have Chair Ray sign a letter of support and discussed fundraising and sponsorship logo options. A presenter explained problem areas at the park (naturally occurring springs and persistent winter wetness), and staff said the South Santiam Watershed Council would serve as a consultant on the restoration work.
Next steps: staff will finalize the support letter for the chair’s signature and continue coordination with watershed partners and parks staff.
