Marine Board approves $100,000 federal grant for Sandy Beach dock study

Janine Belek, the agency’s facilities program manager and tribal liaison, told the board that federal funds had been secured and that State Parks would add $333,334 in cash for analysis and potential follow-on construction grants. Kevin Strandberg of State Parks told members the project will begin with a hydrological and structural study to investigate why a particular keel/joint repeatedly fails and to identify improvements to the wave attenuator system.
"Before we spend any money... we want to do our due diligence and perform this hydrological and structural study so when we do it right, we do it right the first time," Strandberg said. After discussion, a board member moved to approve "facility grant 1769 as presented in the staff report," the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor.
The vote authorizes staff to proceed with engineering analysis and preliminary permitting work; staff said future construction funding will be pursued after the study and permitting are complete.
