Airport Boulevard & Smith Road improvements slated as second-priority under state grant

City staff said the second-priority project identified under the Fuel Impact Reduction Grant focuses on the Airport Boulevard and Smith Road intersection, with work intended to improve a southbound left-turn movement and reconstruct curb returns on the north side of the road.
"Rather than the northbound right turn lane, it's the southbound left turn lane that needs improvements, and then curb returns on the north side of the road would be reconstructed," Sean Hayes said, describing the scope. Like the Tower & Smith work, the Airport & Smith project would also include replacing the traffic signal and updating timing and interconnection with the nearby railroad crossing.
Hayes said Project Airport & Smith is expected to follow a similar two-year design timeline and staff expect to begin its design at the start of 2028. He noted that advancing the Airport & Smith construction will depend on locking down funding after Tower & Smith design and scoping clarify construction needs.
