Aurora plans turn-lane, curb and signal upgrades at Tower & Smith to improve hazardous‑materials routing

Aurora transportation staff said the top-priority project under the Fuel Impact Reduction Grant will be improvements at the Tower Road and Smith Road intersection intended to ease movements for hazardous-materials trucks.
"What this project includes is widening to provide a northbound right turn lane...and replacing the existing traffic signal and updating the timing and the interconnection into the Union Pacific Railroad crossing," Sean Hayes, senior engineer, said. Hayes said the work also includes widening and reconstructing curb returns to create additional room for hazardous-materials trucks to make turns safely.
Hayes told the council the city has dedicated approximately $460,000 for the design of the Tower & Smith project; construction cost estimates are conceptual. Staff are in data collection, have a survey out the week of the presentation, and expect about a 24-month design schedule that would take design work through summer 2028. Hayes said coordination with the railroad and procurement of long‑lead items are key schedule drivers and that construction is targeted to begin in 2029.
