"If we can take the hours out, so there's no set 16 hours in there ... we think this will alleviate some of the pain from our staff," the agency official said, describing negotiations with Montrose and the city's willingness to try the new approach. Speaker 6 explained the arrangement would not change the obligation to respond to calls for service but would reduce the expectation that deputies must sit physically in town on set schedules.
Speaker 6 moved to sign the contract; the motion was seconded and commissioners signed three originals, with copies to be retained by the county and the city. The sheriff's office said it expects the flexible approach to improve coverage and officer morale without increasing the municipal fee.
