Council reviews draft chicken-keeping rules, limits to five birds for typical lots

Police Chief Zachary Mathies presented a revised draft Article 3 (Keeping of Chickens) and reviewed proposed edits. The council removed the term "vexatious" from the definitions, suggested adding a fee-schedule reference to the nuisance section, eliminated chicken tractors, and directed that the chicken run must provide at least 10 square feet per chicken (up to 200 square feet) while the coop could not exceed 100 square feet.
The draft sets a default limit of "No more than 5 total chickens may be kept at a residence within the city, unless the property is at least 2 acres, then not more than 10." Council also indicated a desire to include a prohibition on slaughtering chickens in public view, and voted to change permit-revocation authority language to vest revocation with the Judge rather than the city clerk. Chief Mathies will prepare a final draft that incorporates the council’s edits for a future meeting.
