Council tables joint compactor agreement with Linn County, seeks clarification

The La Cygne City Council reviewed a draft joint compactor agreement between the city and Linn County on Oct. 2 but decided to table action until the full council is present. City Clerk Jodi Wade said she had attended a Linn County commissioner meeting to raise questions about the draft and was not prepared to sign the agreement on the city’s behalf.
City Attorney Burton Harding summarized that an email from Linn County Public Works Superintendent Shaun West noted the State wants new licenses to list city entities under Linn County’s operation because the licenses tie back to the county landfill license. Council Member Keith Stoker asked whether the compactor site would be closed if the city did not sign; Council Member Capp pressed about pricing and Waste Management costs. The council asked Clerk Wade to ask the county whether the State requires the city to be listed or only prefers it and to bring the item back when a full council can consider it.
The minutes record that the council elected to table the agreement and seek clarifying language from Linn County and the State before taking formal action.
