City Manager Putner read a written resignation from Mayor Rob Cross at the Jan. 28 special meeting: "It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to resign my position as mayor," the letter read.
Putner told the council the city charter provides that the council president serves as mayor pro tem in the event of a mayoral vacancy. He recommended that Council President Tracy Mix serve as mayor pro tem for one week and that the council place a formal appointment on the Feb. 4 regular meeting agenda to allow time for public notice and deliberation.
Council members praised Cross's long service. Putner said Cross had served the city “for over 24 years” in multiple roles, and several councilors urged staff to compile a digest of the mayor's ongoing projects so the council can consider how responsibilities might be reassigned if necessary. Council members agreed it was prudent to delay a formal appointment to allow public notification and time for deliberation under the charter.
The council did not take immediate formal action to fill the office beyond the pro tem arrangement; the appointment of a new mayor is scheduled for the Feb. 4 meeting.
