Kalona council directs staff to apply to Iowa DNR to stop adding fluoride to water
Summary
After hearing from Ion Environmental Solutions about facility impacts, the council voted unanimously to begin an Iowa DNR application to discontinue adding fluoride to Kalona’s municipal water supply.
Chad McCleary of Ion Environmental Solutions told the council the chemical poses maintenance concerns: "it is a very corrosive additive to water which can cause damage to the facility and that the city’s water already has some natural fluoride in it." McCleary also noted the State of Iowa does not require adding fluoride, and "the Iowa DNR must give approval via an application that Mr. McCleary would submit on behalf of the City."
On a motion by Councilmember Bender, seconded by Yeggy-Berg, council voted unanimously to direct staff and McCleary to begin the Iowa DNR application process to discontinue the addition of fluoride to the municipal water system. The motion carried with all voting yes.
