Kalona council adopts stricter cemetery decoration and interment rules; approves plot sale

The City of Kalona on July 6 adopted Resolution 2026-S, which revises rules and regulations for municipal cemeteries, and approved the sale of a cemetery plot.
Key elements of the amended rules include: the city assumes no responsibility for preservation or maintenance of decorations; live plantings are prohibited on burial sites; decoration items must be placed on or attached to the monument (not on the monument’s concrete pad); only one shepherd hook and one solar light are permitted per monument with placement restrictions; and staff will remove items that fail to adhere to regulations during the last week of each month and hold them for one week before disposal. Interment rules require a licensed funeral home, a concrete or approved burial liner/vault for each grave, and restrict double burials to situations in which both interments are cremations.
The council approved the sale of a cemetery plot to Christine Scott in a separate motion (motion by Bender, seconded by G Schmidt). Resolution 2026-S was adopted on a motion by Beran, seconded by G Schmidt; council members Bender, J Schmidt, G Schmidt, Yeggy-Berg and Beran each voted yes.
