Commission clarifies that ADUs would be subject to staff administrative design review, not new standards
Summary
Commissioners confirmed accessory dwelling units (ADUs) would remain subject to the same design standards but could be reviewed administratively by staff (shorter, non-noticed review) under the proposed text amendments; the change affects procedure not substantive approval criteria.

During discussion of the text-amendment package, commissioners asked whether ADUs would face the same standards when reviewed administratively. Staff (S4) confirmed that the proposed change shifts certain ADU design reviews to staff-level administrative review—shortening turnaround and avoiding full commission notice—while retaining the same substantive standards: "It's the same standard, the same process," S4 said.
Commissioners sought confirmation that administrative review is not a lower substantive bar and will not remove public-notice opportunities where waivers or appeals are needed. Staff said items requiring waivers or appeals will still move through the public process and to the commission as applicable.
