The Oak Hill Parks and Recreation Advisory Board agreed on May 7 to pursue a July 4 barbecue cook-off as a fundraising event to support the parks and recreation program. Board members discussed event format, beneficiaries, sponsorship, ticketing and the need to consult the city attorney about how raised funds would be handled.
"So we're gonna do it as a cook off... this is gonna be supporting the parks and rec Oak Hill parks and rec," the Chair said as members moved from brainstorming to concrete planning. Members weighed options including a people’s-choice award (public voting) and commissioner judging, whether proceeds should be deposited to a Parks & Rec line item or pass through a nonprofit, and whether to charge attendees or run the event free and rely on sponsorship.
Operational questions were also raised: the county health department’s requirements for food vendors and inspections, porta-potty costs, vendor insurance, and volunteer staffing. The board assigned tasks (bounce-house contact, porta-potty contact, rules lookup) and agreed to present a narrowed plan and budget to the city commission at its next meeting so sponsors and vendors can be confirmed in time.
