John Deirdoff of the Kansas League of Municipalities reviewed the draft community profile and job posting for Hillsborough’s city administrator search and recommended adjustments to broaden the candidate pool. "The job market right now is very tight," Deirdoff told the council, and he recommended lowering the advertised experience requirement from 5–9 years to about 3–5 years to attract more candidates, including nontraditional applicants from private sector or department-head backgrounds.
Deirdoff also described market salary ranges from neighboring communities and suggested Hillsborough consider a $90,000–$120,000 posting range, noting recent hires in peer cities. He outlined a proposed timeline: post the position the week of March 8, close applications April 5, provide candidate books mid‑April, and schedule executive‑session interviews the week of April 20. Council members accepted the recommendation to lower the experience requirement, discussed highlighting local educational partners (Tabor College) in the profile, and agreed to proceed with posting and candidate review per the League’s suggested timeline.
Deirdoff said the League will post broadly (league channels, state associations, KU newsletter) and staff noted LinkedIn reach may add resumes but can include less‑experienced applicants; council members were asked to refrain from contacting candidates directly while the search is active.
