City council representative: Board of Adjustment duties moved to Planning & Zoning

Council representative Popkin told commissioners on July 22 that the Board of Adjustment and Appeals has been officially abolished and that its variance responsibilities for fences, setbacks and signs are now heard by Planning & Zoning.
Popkin said the change was administrative and not a reflection of any individual's performance. City attorney staff confirmed that variances previously processed by the board will now proceed before the full seven-member Planning & Zoning Commission and remain appealable directly to City Council. Popkin encouraged commissioners to attend Urban Renewal Authority meetings and noted a special URA meeting scheduled for Aug. 18 that will include city council members and other taxing-entity representatives.
The consolidation is intended to streamline administrative procedure by removing a separate Board of Adjustment and routing the variance hearings through the full commission.
