Board completes first readings on dozens of policy updates; second readings set for next month

The Director of Schools read a sequence of first readings for policy updates across multiple sections of the board policy manual. Section 1 items included updates to policies on board meetings, agendas and appeals; section 2 covered fiscal management goals; section 4 included family life education, digital device use, athletics, grading, promotion & retention and graduation requirements; sections 5 and 6 contained extensive personnel and student services updates including employment, personnel files, telework during emergencies, separation practices, sick leave, drug and alcohol testing, rights and responsibilities, and several student‑focused policies such as admission of suspended students and emergency allergy response plans.
The director recommended approval of each group for first reading and asked that the board revisit them for second reading next month. Board members voiced approval multiple times during the long reading, and the director said the items will be on the agenda for the August meeting for second readings.
