The board voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Marathon County Health Department so the district can apply for vaping-prevention grant funds.
Administrators said joining the MOU enables the district to be eligible for grant funding; the health department would recommend model alternatives to suspension and help report progress to the state if the grant is accepted. One board member cautioned that accepting the grant could require changes to the student handbook (adding an alternative-to-suspension/citation program) and noted the MOU itself does not obligate the district to implement those changes unless the grant is received. The motion to approve the MOU passed by voice vote.
The district administrator explained the MOU originated from local coalition work (the Marshfield Area Coalition of Youth) and that accepting the MOU is the first step; further requirements would be handled only if the grant were awarded.
