Neighbors urge action on crosswalk and traffic safety near proposed Barker Street apartments
Summary
Several neighbors told the Planning Commission that adding up to 27 cars for the Barker Street project could worsen pedestrian safety at an intersection on Tiffin Avenue; commissioners said they would forward the safety and curb‑cut concerns to the city service and engineering departments for review.

During public comment on July 22, neighbors raised traffic and pedestrian safety concerns related to the proposed redevelopment at 1925 Barker Street.
Carl Winery, who lives diagonally from the site at 1021 Tiffin Ave, told the commission that the nearby intersection lacks a crosswalk and that adding up to 27 new cars could make crossing unsafe for residents, including people with disabilities. "There's no crosswalk at the traffic light between Mills and Tiffin Avenue," he said, urging the city to address the pedestrian crossing and traffic patterns before or during redevelopment. The chair and other commissioners acknowledged the concern and said they would take the comments to the service and engineering departments for review. Staff also said engineering had preliminarily approved the proposed circulation but would review final curb‑cut location and alignment as a minor administrative change if needed.
Another neighbor, property owner Scott Hall of 1058 Tiffin Ave, said he supports rehabilitating the historic building but asked how close the new entrance would be to the intersection and noted snow‑day parking could shift on‑street demand. Commissioners suggested staff can adjust driveway alignment administratively if that resolves conflicts and recommended that engineering examine the driveway and curb‑cut placement.
