The Sandusky Planning Commission voted July 22 to recommend that the City Commission approve a zone map amendment for 1925 Barker Street, moving the parcel from the Public Facilities district to the Residential Business district to permit long‑term residential redevelopment.
Staff presented the application from Barker Street Rentals and told commissioners the rezoning would allow interior conversion of the historic buildings into apartments and is consistent with local strategic goals to expand housing options. "Therefore, staff recommends that planning commission recommend approval to city commission for this item," staff said during the presentation. Staff noted no objections from other departments and stressed that the rezoning is a prerequisite for future development approvals.
Commissioners praised the adaptive reuse of the historically significant school building and discussed housing needs in the city before a motion to recommend approval was made and seconded. The commission approved the recommendation by roll call; the clerk recorded seven yes votes and no dissenting votes. The matter now goes to the Sandusky City Commission for final action.
