The Lake Helen police chief for five years announced his retirement effective April 30, saying the decision was not the result of staff issues and expressing support for a smooth transition. "April 30 is my 5 year mark as chief ... The reason I'm leaving is not because of any staff," he said in his announcement.
City staff earlier outlined the police chief hiring timeline: they plan to interview eight candidates on March 26–27 before an interviewer panel that will include three police chiefs and city staff; the commission discussed whether to select three finalists for interviews at a special meeting and reiterated that any preliminary screening by a subcommittee must comply with sunshine-law public meeting requirements.
