During the Q&A that followed the absenteeism presentation, board members raised concerns about the CTC. Officials said CTC students are typically enrolled half a day at the tech center and half a day at the high school, and that instructor vacancies (for example, welding had no instructor in September) have affected students. "We were not able to hire 1 [welding instructor], and, again, because the 1st 1 did not feel like we were paying enough," a district official said.
Officials also described a technical issue in which dual-reporting between high school and CTC attendance systems sometimes resulted in students being marked absent twice, an issue the state department and district staff were addressing. "It was doubling their absences," the presenter said of the early rollouts. Staff said they are working with CTC and high-school staff to align attendance practices and that a senior work program will give some students on-track options to earn hours at job sites as part of a revised approach to career programming.
