Toledo council authorizes mayor, city manager to sign opposition letter to proposed ropeless gear rule

The Toledo City Council voted unanimously on Feb. 11 to authorize the mayor and city manager to sign a letter opposing proposed changes by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife that would require 'pop up' (ropeless) gear in the commercial Dungeness crab fishery.
City Manager Higner summarized the petition and timeline to the council, saying, "the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife had received a petition that, seeks the requirement of implementation of pop up also known as ropeless, year for, Dungeness crab fishery, that would be implemented by 2028." Council members and local industry representatives cited the cost of equipment and potential regional economic impacts in support of the letter.
Council moved the authorization in a formal motion that the transcript records as being "moved by Frank and seconded by Eric." The council then conducted a roll-call vote: Councilor Keating, Councilor Kaufman, Councilor Chamber, Council President Silvia and the Mayor all voted yes. The motion passed 5-0, and the mayor closed the special meeting.
The letter will be signed by the mayor and city manager and submitted to the agency as the council's formal opposition to the proposed regulation.
