Franklin details Scott Park sports campus plans, including 900-space parking and multi-sport fields

At the July 16 Park Board meeting, Chip (staff member) presented a concept plan to expand Scott Park onto recently acquired land north of the existing park. He traced the project history to flood recovery after 2008 and said the redevelopment commission purchased the property roughly 18 months ago. "We actually looked at this property that we're gonna talk about today...It was owned by Sid Eskenazi...The redevelopment commission bought the property about, I don't know, 18 months ago now, maybe," Chip said.
Chip described amenities under consideration: seven youth baseball diamonds and one larger teen/adult diamond, multiple soccer fields, three fishing piers on the pond, three basketball courts, 12 lit pickleball courts, expanded trails linking to the Greenway and a parking expansion to roughly 900 spaces compared with about 150 today. He said the main access would be off Commerce Drive and the plan includes a roundabout to improve access. Chip emphasized the design remains conceptual and "you may see some tweaks in it," and invited Crossroad Engineers to answer technical questions as the design is refined.
The board did not take a formal vote on the concept itself; the item proceeded as part of a larger project package that the board advanced via a declaratory resolution later in the meeting. Consultants and staff said construction would be staged to allow play to continue at existing fields during work on the new site.
