Bus operators, legal staff and board discuss revised transportation policy; district to post redline copy

Board legal staff described a revised transportation policy that has been circulated to operators and will be posted on the district website with an email to operators on Monday, the board heard July 23. "This revised policy was done as a coordinated effort with SSPA and Kanawha County Schools in an attempt to make the policy more...streamlined so that there is no confusion," Miss McIntosh said, adding the revisions include redline changes and a sample bus schedule for review.
Drivers and their representatives told the board they remain concerned about some provisions but welcomed the recent revisions and ongoing collaboration. Patrick Smolder, who identified himself as a Kanawha County employee and president of the WBSS PA, said the group had "made a tremendous amount of progress" with district staff but that some operators remained upset and wanted continued discussion. The legal representative addressed a specific concern, saying "No one is going to be forced to work a 14 hour day" and promising the revised policy would be posted and emailed to operators for comment. The board encouraged continued dialogue and review during the posted comment period.
