Residents urge careful standards as Ferguson staff drafts data-center ordinance

At the July 21 meeting, resident Mike Kosilevski of Greenleaf Manor asked the board to ensure any data-center ordinance accounts for technological change and community impacts. "There is new technology in data centers that they are quieter...they don't require as much water," he said, and he urged the township to set standards so data centers "don't destroy our property values and ruin the quality of life." Kosilevski also noted an incident where a large operator (cited as GE) ran a generator for weeks, raising local concern about noise and operations.
Township management told the board the planning commission is comfortable with staff drafting a data-center ordinance and staff were given a six-week window to return a draft to the PC; the process includes county planning review (30 days) before any public hearing. The manager emphasized it's preferable to have a baseline ordinance that can be amended later rather than no ordinance at all. No ordinance text was presented at this meeting.
