The City of Montrose City Council voted 4-0 Aug. 19 to award a $18,200 contract for a spot repair to a failed 24‑inch storm sewer segment at Lenerman Industrial Park.
Council discussion centered on whether to authorize an immediate localized repair or delay work for a full line replacement. Mayor Console described a sinkhole near the east side of the industrial park and said engineers reported two bids in the packet — one for a spot repair and another to replace the entire line. “We got 2 quotes in your packet,” Mayor Console said, adding that the concrete and corrugated pipe condition will not be known until contractors excavate the hole.
Opponents of delaying the repair cited the timing: contractors could mobilize quickly to do a spot repair, while a full replacement would push the related road mill-and-overlay into next year and require roughly $112,000 beyond current budgeted funds. Council member (S1) asked whether a spot repair would leave the city with repeated failures; the mayor replied that “it could happen again” but that immediate replacement money was not available.
After discussion, the councilor made a motion “to approve the bid from Deepgram for 24 inch HDTV spot that’s repaired for a total of $18,200.” The motion passed 4-0.
City staff said they plan to document findings from excavation and camera inspection and to include a full replacement on planning lists for next year if conditions warrant. “We’re definitely gonna have a camera or… jetter all the way down there… to make sure it’s all clear,” Mayor Console said.
