Residents press council on e-bike safety, property maintenance and past event reforms

During the public portion on Sept. 9 residents raised several community concerns. Lois Jewell asked when Bentwood Drive (on the 2025 road program) will be repaved and requested the grass outside Crab Du Jour be cut; Township Administrator and Clerk Ms. Eggers said she had added the issue to the list for the code enforcement officer and Mayor Hutchins said Mathew Kreuzer would send a letter to the property owner.
Jen Reppert questioned the lack of public comment at first readings and opposed Ordinance 2025-17 on property-rights grounds, asking what reforms address issues stemming from the Carli Lloyd event. Mr. Lyon and Solicitor Carleton explained that public comment on first reading is limited by state statute (40:41A-101) and Mr. Lyon said the prior legal advice given around the earlier event had been incorrect and that the Township Attorney at that time was asked to step down.
Council members also raised safety concerns about e-bikes during their reports; Mr. Smith said e-bike safety is a major concern and plans to work with law enforcement on rider education, and Mr. Lyon said a new ordinance and school training are planned to reduce risk. The council did not take a formal vote on e-bike rules at this meeting.
