Residents say raw sewage spilled on Leon Avenue; engineer, council say contractor responsible

Residents raised health and oversight concerns about the Leon Avenue sewer replacement project during the public comment period. Dave Sutter of 206 Leon Avenue told council he was “unhappy with the condition of the Leon Avenue Sewer Replacement Project site” and concerned about raw sewage spilling onto the street and a lack of timely responses to his emails.
Gerry Savidge of 304 Leon Avenue emphasized the need to notify affected homeowners that raw sewage had been present; Engineer Salvatore D’Armiento asked for the addresses of the impacted homes and said the contractor had been instructed to notify residents. D’Armiento described the event as caused by an unforeseen problem during removal of a pump and a miscommunication while addressing the issue: “The contractor knows that it was their responsibility, and they do not anticipate that it will happen again.”
Council did not take formal enforcement action at the session; D’Armiento said he would speak again with the contractor about additional roadway cleanup. The public comment portion then closed without further council motions specific to the sewage incident.
