Delran to adopt trained narcotics K‑9 'Ron' after unanimous council support

Council members agreed at the Aug. 26 work session to move forward with adopting a police K‑9 offered by the nonprofit K‑9 Protectors.
Captain Joe Vasbinder described K‑9 Protectors as a nonprofit that rescues shelter dogs and trains them for law enforcement roles if they pass required tests. Vasbinder said Ron "is a three-year-old American Bully who is trained to detect a wide variety of narcotics and is nationally certified," and that a donor has volunteered to fund the vehicle kit needed for any department that adopts him. Much of Ron’s ongoing care—food and monthly training sessions in Middlesex County—will be provided at no cost to Delran. After discussion, Council voted unanimously to proceed with the adoption.
Acting Chief Gasper and other officials noted that a narcotics‑trained dog can be used in traffic stops and other investigations; the department views the dog as an asset for narcotics detection and general operational use. The Council did not identify additional local funding requirements beyond the donor-funded vehicle kit and nonprofit support.
