Council approves switch to Ogden Transfer Station with Republic Services; recycling option revived

The council approved a contract to send the city's curbside residential waste to the Ogden Transfer Station, operated by Republic Services, under terms presented by City Manager/Attorney John Call.
"Our recommendation is that we continue with Republic, who is operating the Ogden Transfer Station," John Call said, explaining the contract price of $48 per ton through June 30, 2028 with automatic one-year renewals thereafter. Call said the pricing formula ties annual adjustments to the CPI for waste and utility services and includes a fuel-index surcharge; he added a clause allowing the city to re-bid or cancel within 30 days if an extraordinary market adjustment above 10 percent is requested by the hauler.
Ashley Collie, a Republic Services representative at the meeting, confirmed the change does not alter the landfill destination—material still ultimately goes to Tooele County—but moves the transfer point from Weber County's facility to the Ogden Transfer Station, a roughly two-mile difference for collection routing. Council members asked how fuel surcharges would be managed and whether the change could make recycling via a materials-recovery facility (MRF) more feasible; staff said recycling is back on the table cost-wise now that Republic will haul to its own facility.
The motion to approve the agreement passed on a roll-call vote as recorded in the minutes.
