The board debated a staff proposal to allow the administration to engage outside staffing agencies to recruit and place up to approximately 14.5 special-education teachers needed for the start of the 2026–27 school year.
Administration framed the proposal as proactive: the FY27 budget anticipated some contract services, and the district wants to avoid classrooms without certified teachers on day one. Staff suggested using routine approval thresholds (not to exceed $25,000 per short-term contract where appropriate) and said the administration would return to the board with detailed contract amounts and counts at the next meeting. "We need to be able to engage with some contractors because it's already August, and there's not a lot of time," a staff member said.
Several board members expressed discomfort with open-ended contracting and pressed for clearer parameters, timelines and confirmation that spending would remain within the budgeted amounts. The board ultimately approved a motion to authorize the chief operating officer to contact additional qualified staffing agencies if necessary after 08/01/2026 to fill remaining special-education teacher vacancies for FY27, with updates to be provided to the Board; the motion passed on a voice vote.
