Accountancy board waives CPA exam fees for now; seeks small staff compensation increase

Sheree Brewer, executive director of the State Board of Public Accountancy, said the board approved a fee-waiver program starting Jan. 1 to cover application fees and retake fees for CPA-exam candidates and intends to review the program each December based on cash balances. "For the first two weeks, that's all I've got. 42 candidates," Brewer said when asked how many had taken advantage of the waiver.
Brewer requested a 3% compensation line item to help retain staff and described succession planning for the executive director role, saying an audit supervisor will pursue CPA licensure to be eligible as a future executive director. She clarified the board does not offer representation for licensees in tax disputes with the IRS or state tax authorities, though it will investigate complaints or referrals from agencies such as the IRS or PCAOB. No formal appropriation decisions were made at the session; the board's request and program will be subject to the legislative appropriation process.
