The mayor asked the council for approval to work with city staff and the city attorney to draft an ordinance that would ban the sale of concentrated synthetic kratom products within Mount Carmel city limits. "I asked the council, for their approval to move forward with an ordinance to work with, Mister Turner and our attorney to ban the sale of synthetic kratom 7 0 and other synthetic green market substances within the corporate city limits," the mayor said. He told the council he had contacted Wabash General Hospital, which told him it had not seen a spike in cases the hospital would attribute to those products.
The mayor referenced the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and FDA temporary scheduling actions described in the meeting as a two-year temporary order targeting concentrated synthetic products. He told the council some municipalities have delayed local ordinances pending lawsuits filed by industry groups, but asked the council for permission to proceed with drafting local rules that would align with federal enforcement priorities. No ordinance was introduced or adopted at the meeting; the mayor said staff and the attorney would prepare draft language and return it for formal consideration at a later meeting.
