DeKalb launches Office of Sustainability and previews 'Resilient DeKalb 2040' master plan

The county’s newly installed chief sustainability officer, speaking in a county briefing, framed the program around measurable operational efficiency and community-focused resilience.
The officer said the plan—branded internally as "Resilient DeKalb 2040"—will emphasize renewables, greenhouse gas reduction, stormwater management and building performance, and include a public dashboard when initial kinks are resolved. "No metrics, no story," the officer said, adding that she has been in the role seven weeks and is working to "regain and reclaim" DeKalb’s earlier leadership in sustainable county operations. She also said policies currently routed for legal review will be released publicly in the coming weeks.
Officials described the plan as long-range and iterative: investments will be planned on five-, 10- and 15-year horizons to shift from reactive maintenance to proactive capital improvement planning. The officer said the effort is cross-departmental and requires community partnerships to implement education and behavior-change programs that underpin the plan’s goals.
The county did not provide a firm timeline for every element; officials said some targets and pilot programs will be detailed as staff finish internal routing and public outreach.
