Commission approves 16,830 sq ft performing-arts addition at 113 Saint Mary's Place
Summary
The Historic District Commission approved HDCC20270003 for a 16,830-square-foot performing-arts theater addition to Saint Vincent Pilate (Pilates) High School at 113 Saint Mary's Place; staff said materials and massing were designed to match existing masonry and previous approvals had phased the project.

Jay Michie, director of the Department of Economic and Community Development, presented the application (HDCC20270003) for a 16,830-square-foot performing-arts addition at Saint Vincent Pilate (Pilates) High School, explaining the addition will include a 210-seat theater, split-face masonry to match existing red brick at low elevations, and colored siding above that matches prior drawings. "The applicant is again seeking historic district commission approval to construct a 16,830 square foot addition... the building will have split face masonry to closely match existing red brick," Michie said, and noted the board of appeals approved a required variance on 05/28/2026 and that an earlier HDC approval was issued in 2021 but lapsed due to financial delay.
Applicant representative Jeff Palumbo said the latest design follows earlier HDC guidance, that construction was phased for financial reasons, and that salvaged brick from historic houses would be incorporated into the new lobby. Commissioners asked for clearer site-plan views and details about landscaping and exterior lighting; the applicant clarified that the theater sits at the corner facing 9th and Montgomery, that roughly 210 seats are planned, and that landscaping will be completed at the end of the project. A motion to approve HDCC20270003 carried on roll call.
