The Hamilton County Board of Zoning Appeals voted to approve a variance allowing an accessory dwelling at 15219 East 186th Street in Noblesville.
Petitioner Lydia Thompson told the board the unit is intended as a "mother-in-law" dwelling so her 84-year-old mother can live on-site for care, privacy and dignity. Thompson said the family plans a long-term, multigenerational arrangement where the unit will remain in the family: "we just wanna have a place where she can be close, where we can care for her needs as she ages," she said.
Board members asked whether the primary dwelling exists; Thompson confirmed it does not and said both the primary house and the accessory unit would be built roughly at the same time. Following public comment, a board member moved to approve the petition and another member successfully amended the motion to require the applicant to record the approval limiting the accessory dwelling to family use only. The board then voted to approve the variance.
The petition filed under docket BCARV006072026 cited Article 3.824 of the Hamilton County Unified Development Ordinance (07-25-2022-A as amended 07/10/2023). The board's written condition requires the recordation that the accessory dwelling be used only by the petitioner's family; the motion was recorded on the meeting record but a numeric roll-call tally was not specified in the transcript.
